An Inquisition Indented, taken for our Sovereign Lord the
King, at the Parish of Saint James
within the Liberty of the Dean and Chapter of the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, Westminster ,
in the County of Middlesex , the Second day of September in the Ninth Year
of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord GEORGE the Third, by the Grace of God, of Great-Britain,
France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth, before Thomas Prickard< no role > , Gentleman,
Coroner of our said Lord the King for the said City and Liberty, on View of the Body of
Joseph Woodward< no role > then and there lying dead, upon the Oath of Jacob
Vanderhelm

chosen, who being then and there duly sworn and Charged to enquire for our said Lord the
King, when, how, and by what Means the said Joseph Woodward< no role > came to
h is Death, do upon their Oath say, That a Certain Hole or Sesspool for the Reception
of Water and other Superfluons Filth under part of the Workshop of Frederic
Kuhff
< no role > Confectioner situate in the Hay Market in the Parish Liberty and
County aforesaid, in length of time being full, and the Air therein become
Putrid and Unwholsome, And that the said Joseph Woodward< no role > on the Second
day of September in the Year aforesaid, with other Labourers being
employed to Empty and Cleanse the said Hole or Sesspool and then and there
being down in the said Hole so employed, It happened that the said
Joseph Woodward< no role > , with the Sulphurious Stench and Fumes there in
Contained, was then and there Suffocated, of which said Suffocation he
the said Joseph Woodward< no role > then and there died, And so the Jurors aforesaid
upon their Oath aforesaid do say, that the said Joseph Woodward< no role > Accidentally
Casually and by Misfortune in manner and by the Means aforesaid came
to his Death, and not other wise. In Witness whereof as well the
said Coroner as the said Jacob Vanderhelm< no role > Foreman of the said Jurors,
on the behalf of himself and the rest of his Fellows, in their Presence
have to this Inquisition set their Hands and Seals the Day Year and Place
first above written
