Copy of Informations taken 21st. Septr. 1768 at the Parish of St. Martin
in the Fields , touching the Death of James Mackoun< no role > .

William Leake< no role > Surgeon Saith that he was fetched to James Mackoun< no role > the Deced on Friday
the ninth day of this Instant Septr. in the forenoon Says that he went to Deced at Mrs.
Mackoun's in Chandors Street in said Parish and found as light contused Wound on the back
part of his Head, Says that on making an Incision into the Scalp a large Fracture appeared
in the Scull on the back part of the Head in extent about four inches, which Fracture was the
immediate cause of Deced's Death. And Dept. believes that it was occasioned by Deced felling
with his Head against some hard Body.

Philip Morris< no role > saith that on Thursday the 8th. day of this instant Sepr. about the hour of
Eleven in the Evening, he this Dept. was going with the Deced along Russel Street , when the Deced
clapped his hand in his Pocket and said that he had lost his Handkerchief upon which he
Collar'd a Man that stood in the Cro d behind him and charged him with having pick'd his
Packet which the Man doined, and a very great Cro d soon gathered, Says that he advised
Deced to let the Man go, which he did and walked on with Dept. under the Piazza in
Covent Garden followed by a great Number of People who said do you call us Pick pocket
Says that the Deced and this Dept. there turned about saying, You Pick pockets & Thieves
do you want to rob us of more upon which one of the Men immediately with his Hand
struck the Deced upon his Head which knocked him down upon his Back, and the
back part of his Head against the Stone Pavement, Says that the Deced lay there
Speechless and unable to move, and the Man immediately ran away, Says that he
took up the Deced who continued insensible, and Deced was carried in a Chair to
Mrs. Mackoun's in Chandor's Street , Says that he does not know the Man that gave Deced
the Blow on his Head, and that the Deced was at that time in Liquor

John Fryer< no role > saith that on the Eighth Instant between Eleven and Twelve o'Clock in
the Evening this Dept. was going under the Piazza in Covent Garden and heard Mr. Morris
who was with the Deced, call a Man that stood near, with some others, Thief & Pick pocket
upon which the Man stepped up to the Deced and struck him on the left side of his Head
with his Right hand, and knocked the Deced down, who fell with the back part of his Head
upon the Stone Pavement where he lay Speechless for a longtime, and the Man immediately
ran away, upon which a Watchman that stood by with his Rattle alarmed the other
Watchmen and [..] the Man was soon after brought back and taken to the Watchhouse
belonging to the Parish of St. Paul Covent Garden where he Confessed having struck the
Deced, Says that he afterwards went to the Deced under the Piazza who had been taken
up, but continued insensible and Speechless, Says that he was put into a Chair & carried to
Mrs. Mackown's in Chandor's Street in the Parish of St. Martin in the Fields Says that the
Man that struck the Deced was taken the next Morning before Sr. John Fielding< no role > when he
again acknowledge striking the Deced for which he was Sorry, and said that his Rame
was John Neille< no role > . And this Dept. says that he called several times at Mrs. Mackoun's to
inquire for the Deced, and was informed there yesterday that the Deced died there that
Morning (Septr. 20) about Ten o'Clock.

Richard Barnard< no role > saith that between 11 & 12 o'Clock at Night of the Eighth Instant he saw the
Deced and Mr. Morris standing under the Piazza in Covent Garden , the Deced Complaining of having
lost his Handkerchief but said he could not charge any Person of Robbing him, Several Men being
then near him, Says that Mr. Morris called the Men Thieves & Pick pockets, and that John Neille< no role >
immediately went up to Deced and with his Hand struck the Deced on his Head and knocked him
down, upon which the Man ran away, and Dept. pursued him and apprehended him Says that
he with his Rattle alarmed the other Watchmen, who with Dept. took the Man to the Watchhouse.
