Informations of Witnesses taken this Twenty Eight
day of February 1765 at the Parish of St. Martin in the
Fields within the Liberty of Westmr . in the County of Middlesex
on an Inquisition taken on View of the Body of Jane Austin< no role >
lying Dead in the said Parish Liberty and County

Ann James< no role > the Wife of Lewis James< no role > of New Bedford Court in
the Parish of St. Martin in the Fields Chairman on her Oath saith,
That between Eight and Nine o Clock yesterday Morning Deponent
was in her Apartment on the Ground Floor, and heard somebody
coming down Stairs, Says that she opened her Door, and saw
a Black Man (who is a Lodger in Dept. House on the first Floor)
coming down Stairs with the Deced in his Arms carefully,
and laid the Deced down in the Passage near the bottom
of the Stairs, upon her backside, Says that the Deced's Head
came to the Ground, but Dept. cannot say whether it was owing to
her weakness or her being in Liquor, but says that the Black
Man did not throw her down upon her Head, Says that the
Black Man immediately carried the Deced into the Court
before Deponents Door and laid her carefully down, Says that
Deced did not speak afterwards to the Deponents knowledge
and that she died in the Court in about two or three Minutes
after, Deponent says that she saw a Bruise in Deced's forehead,
which she reced in the Passage by her Head coming to the floor
as Deponent believes, Says that she has no reason to think
that the Deced reced any ill treatment in Depts. House.

Mrs. James in New Bedford Court on the first Floor, on her Oath
saith, That she had been out on Business on Tuesday last and
returned home between twelve and one o Clock, and found
the Deced in her Room, with the Women that were at work
for Dept. Says that she then desired the Deced to go away,
Dept.
