The Committee proceeded to appoint an Architect to prepare
a Plan or Plans of a House of Correction for this County adapted to the Ground
approved of by the Court for that purpose and thereupon appointed Jacob
Lawrence
< no role > Esqr . Architect for the above purpose

It appearing that the greatest number of Prisoners confined
at any one time in the House of Correction hath been 233 Your Committee
Resolved that Accommodation for not more than 350 together with proper
conveniences for labour be provided in the New House of Correction to be
built for this County and gave it as an instruction to the Architect to
form a Plan with a Surrounding Wall to the Prison and another
Plan without such Wall.

Mr. Leroux pursuant to the Resolutions of the Committee
produced Two Plans of a House of Correction for this County on a Scale
adapted to the Ground purchased of the Quakers for that purpose Vizt.
One with a Surrounding Wall the other without such Wall, the same
were marked A. Aa. Ab. Ac. Ad Ae. B and signed by the
Clerk to the Committee and are hereunto subjoined

Mr. Leroux also produced to the Committee a Paper
purporting to be an explanation of Plan A of which the following is a Copy

"A General Description of the Design made for Middlesex

"Bridewell

"Principal Story (Four feet above the Level of the adjoining Street)

"Entrance.


"A Gateway detached from the Enclosing Wall or Rails with framed
"Close Gates in front and framed Open Gates next the Court Yard over
"which a Tower, Guns, Alarm Bell and Clock with a Way up thereto
"from between the Gates: from the Platform adjoining the Court and
"different entrances may be guarded.

"On the right hand the Surgeons Apartment: and on the left a
"Lodge for some of the Keepers and to attend the entrance.

"Underneath the said Entrance by means of the adjoining
"Stair Place, a Place Arched and sufficiently Airy to put the Prisoners inst.
