Minutes of the Commce appointed to enquire into the un due and illegal
Practices of certain Justices of the Peace for this County

The Revd Mr Michael Pope< no role > upon his Oath declared that the following Summons
under the hand and Seal of Robt Elliot< no role > Esqr vizt No. 1
was Left at his house in Charterhouse Square that a second Summons of the
like kind had also been Left as also a Message from the said Justice informing
that if the Person Summoned did not attend at his Office pursuant thereto greater
expences would be incurred that Mr Pope did attend the sd Justice and was induced
thro' his advice to pay the Sum of seven Shillings part of which he understood
was for the Coachman andfour Shillingstwo Shills & six pence other part thereof for the Summinces
and further that the cause for which this Summons was Issued was concerning the
fare of a Hackney Coachman whose Coach was taken in Leather Lane Holborn
and discharged in Charterhouse Square

Mr Brettel laid before this Committee the following Summonses Vizt.

It appears to your Committee that by the Ignorance and Informality of the
Summonses against Houses of Highgate a Common Carrier that the Laws
are rendered of non Effect and offenders escape Justice
