The Information of James Rowcroft< no role > a Lodger at Mr Hemmings's
a Cheesemonger in St. Martin's Lane , (And an Hamess Maker by
Trade) taken upon Oath this 17th Day of December 1774 before us
John Barnfather< no role > and John Lane< no role > Esquires, Two of his Majesty's
Justices of the peace for the said County, City & Liberty

This Informant being upon his Oath declareth and
Saith That Yesterday Morning before Nine o' Clock, He went to
the Office of Thomas Hawkins< no role > and Company (Lottery office Keepers,)
at No. 28 or New Street Covent Garden , Where he saw a person now
present before us (the said Justices,) Whose Name is Edward Gillam< no role >
who Officiated then and there as Clerk in the said Lottery Office
When the said James Rowcroft< no role > (this Informant) Insured five Numbers
in the present Note Lottery from being Drawn Blacks or Prizes that
Day; Two of which Numbers Vizt. 46, 428, and 34, 757 he paid
for the Insurance of the said Two last Mentioned Numbers the Sum
of One Pound Seventeen Shillings and Six pence, And if Either of those
Tickets came up that Day Blank or Prize He was to have Two
Halves and Two Eighths of the said Tickets, That the Ticket 46, 428
came up a Blank Yesterday, and 34, 757 came up a £20 Prize
Yesterday; That this Informant thereupon went to the said Lottery
office in New Street aforesaid, And Also went to the said Thomas Hawkins< no role > 's
other Lottery office in Long Acre , Where he saw both the said Thomas
Hawkins
< no role > and the said Edward Gillam< no role > , both of whom refused
to pay the said Informant Two Halues and Two Eighths of the
said Two Lottery Tickets; And the said Thomas Hawkins< no role > and Edward
Gillam
< no role > being Now both personally present before us the said
Justices, We the said Justices required and demanded of them or
either of them the Sight of the said Two Lottery Tickets, When Each
of them severally refused to Produce them, And did Acknowledge
that Neither of them had then or Ever had either or both the said 2
Tickets so drawn in their or Either of their Power, Custody, or
possession, By which he the said Informant Complains upon his
said Oath, that he has been knowingly and designed by false
pretences Cheated and defrauded of the said Sum of One Pound
Seventeen Shillings and Six Pence by him the said Edward Gillam< no role >
