, and is Situate in the very Heart of this Metropolis, hath been<lb></lb>
long complained of, on account of the Closeness and Incommodiousness of the<lb></lb>
Building, and its total Unfitness for the Reception of the grat Number of Priso-<lb></lb>
ners crowded into it, at th Opening of the several Sessions held at the <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50547_geo84">Old Bailey</rs>

<p n="100">Upon a Survey thereof, it appears, that the Goal cannot be rendered Healthy and Commo-<lb></lb>
dious, without being taken down and rebuilt upon a more extended Plan, which will be <lb></lb>
attended with an Expence, on a modereate Estimate, of 40,000 l.</p>

have, for many Years past, maintained and supported the Goal, and <lb></lb>
the ordinary Repairs of it, but the rebuilding it upon the Plan proposed, is too great a Work<lb></lb>
for them to engage in singly. - They would gladly contribute their reasonable Proportion, and <lb></lb>
have made their humble Application to Parliament, upon that Foundation.</p>

Case with their Answer to it, in opposite Columns, Paragraph by Paragraph.</p>

thought to have deserved the Thanks of the Public, for their Endeavours to remove a most<lb></lb>
dangerous Nusance, from the Capital of the King's Dominions, and to promote a salutary<lb></lb>

600 Years hath been, a Common Prison, and <lb></lb>
Place of Security, for Felons, and other Offen-<lb></lb>
ders; and, so far as it tends to secure, and <lb></lb>
bring to Punishment, those who by Acts of Rapine and <lb></lb>
Violence, endanger the Persons and Properties of Mankind,<lb></lb>
it seems to be of public Use and Benefit: Notwithstanding<lb></lb>
which, the Citizens of <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50547_geo94">London</rs>

see it in that Light; and yet in Respect of the Closeness<lb></lb>

of a free Circulation of Air or Water; the Multi<obscured></obscured>

poor Wretches confined there, many of them brought<lb></lb>
thither diseased, too often infecting, and always corrupt-<lb></lb>
ing one another, from the unavoidabel Communication<lb></lb>
with each other; the Numbers who die there every<lb></lb>
Year of a malignant Distemper; the Possibility of that<lb></lb>
Distemper once more reaching the Sessions-House, and<lb></lb>
communicating itself to the Neighbourhood, and even be-<lb></lb>
coming epidemical, not to mention that many Econo-<lb></lb>
mical Dispositions necessary for the reasonable Accommo-<lb></lb>
dation of the Prisoners are wanting, and cannot be sup-<lb></lb>
plied; the Goal of <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50547_geo97">Newgate</rs>
