September 1799.

Butcher said he believed him to be as Innocent as
himself or any other Man in the Kingdom, I
believe Mr.. Aris say'd that he would ask the Committee
or somebody and that if his behaviour warranted
it he should go into the Kitchen it depended upon his
own behaviour this was after Evans left the Room
I think then a Question was asked by Butcher whether< no role >
he might be allowed to Drink any thing but the
Goal allowance I do not know whether Beer or
Wine was mentioned I think the Governor Answered
was that he never Allowed a Prisoner any thing
but what was Customarily allowed in the Goal unless
the Doctor sanctioned it when Butcher asked Evans
how he did he say'd he was as well as could be

must be Answered at an early hour in the Morning
and that they were for the County I told him I would
ask Butcher but at the same time told him I did
not much like it, It so happened I met Butcher
some where about Parliament Street the same day.
as I was going from Mr.. Aris's, I repeated Mr.. Aris's
words as near as I could to Butcher and told
Butcher at the same time that I thought it not a
proper thing to be asked and do recollect saying to
