<p n="1144">The Committee could not but observe strong Traces of<lb></lb>
Malevolence and Ingratitude in the character Demeanour and<lb></lb>
Language of Smith when he appeared before them</p>
<p n="1145">The Calendar of the Days of Meeting was Ordered to be<lb></lb>
Continued.</p>
<p n="1146">The last Meeting was held on the 9th. of January 1798.</p>
<p n="1147">At which Messrs. Hopkins and Sutton attended and they<lb></lb>
having examined the State of the Boiler were both of Opinion<lb></lb>
that is was injured thro' Mismanagement</p>
<p n="1148">The Committee having Received much kindness from the<lb></lb>
Communications of Mr.. Bernard at the <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMGO55611_geo917">Foundling Hospital</rs>

who will be ready to send People well acquainted with the<lb></lb>
Management of this matter have determined with the<lb></lb>
Approbation of this Court to <rs type="occupation" id="LMSMGO55611_occ410">adopt the Plan of the Foundling</rs>

Hospital in to do. by which they have no Doubt if the<lb></lb>
Report (which I have in my Hand) from the Foundling<lb></lb>
may be depended on which I am sure it may that the first<lb></lb>
Cost of Erecting these Boilers will be paid for in less than ½<lb></lb>
a Year in the saving of Coals and that many Chaldrons<lb></lb>
will in future be Annuably saved to the County.</p>
<p n="1149">I have here Sir troubled the Court with I par. too long<lb></lb>
a Detail of the proceedings of the Committee from which I<lb></lb>
trust it will appear that at least we are endeavouring to<lb></lb>
under the House of Correction a House of Industry very<lb></lb>
beneficial towards the Reform of Prisoners many of whose<lb></lb>
vicious Practices were the Result of Idleness in the Place of<lb></lb>
which we are endeavouring to establish Habits of Industry</p>
<p n="1150">We have certainly saved the County a considerable Sum<lb></lb>
in several Instances, We have incurred some Expence in<lb></lb>
others, for which as Expences an ample Recompence in a short<lb></lb>
space of time.</p>

Examine and Audit from time to time the Account or Accounts<lb></lb>
of the Treasurer of this County as well with Respect to his</p>
