October 1797.

By adjournment same Day.

The following Letter from Sir William Gibbons< no role > Bart .
one of His Majestys Justices of the peace for this County being laid
before the Court and Read Vizt.

W; Mainwaring Esqr.
Hanover Square .
Stanwell Place Octr. 23d. 1797.

My Dear Sir

A Bridge at Poyle within the Manor of Stanwell
will be presented by myself or the High Constable of that Division
at the present Sessions the onus of Repair will certainly full on [..]
the County or on your humble Servant as Lord of the Manor
I admit that my predecessors had for 50 or 60 Years repaird
this Bridge and that till within these 25 Years they kept a
Bar across it to prevent at their pleasure all but foot
Passengers from passing over it I have been in possession of
the Manor for more than 20 Years and have uniformly
refused to repair the Bridge and have left it open for all the
Kings Subjects it is now literally falling down and impassable
and as it is in the high Road from Stanes to Colnbrook some
thing must soon be done I contend that this must be done
by the County and if the Magistrates in Sessions are not
satisfied with the Decesion of the Court of K B in the Case of
the King against the West riding of Yorkshire in 5 Bur. & 2
Blackstones Reports I am ready to have the question argued
in the Kings Bench on a Case, or in any way which will save
time and Expence You perhaps may suggest such a Plan as
I am really ignorant of the forms to be observed in these
matters and only wish to Terminate a business very essential
to the Public convenience

My Dear Sir,
Most truly Yours,
W; Gibbons.

I have consulted Mr.. Hasgrave
who thinks the County liable to
the repairs of this Bridge.
