May 1797.

aged about 14. who had been deserted by his Master a Chimney
sweeper and found in a perishing State, and humanely sent
to him by a Magistrate form Hatton Garden was now recovered
and fit to be apprenticed and that Wm.. Cane< no role > who had been a
Prisoner and whose business in Prison was attending in the
Infirmary, had shown a great Love for the Boy and been
very instrumental in his Recovery and the said Cane whose
Behaviour in Prison was remarkably good being a Taylor
and expressing a great desire when he has established
himself to take this Boy as an apprentice-The Committee
did not think proper to grant the request of the said Wm..
Cane, but Ordered that the sum of 3 Guas. being something
more than the 6th. part of his Earnings be given him for
his remarkable assiduity, Care and Tenderness towards
the sick Prisoners and towards this poor Child in
particular

Wm.. Smith< no role > was called before the Committee and
particularly Examined respecting a Letter of his, the
Contents whereof were recited in a very impressive manner
by Mr.. Horne Tooke at a late Public Meeting and
Published in the Morning Chronicle-Smith declared
That he had no Correspondence with Mr.. H. Tooke. but
admitted that he had written a Confidential Letter to his
Wife but it was only to give her a more favourable
Impression than she would otherwise have had of his
Treatment in the Prison and with no intention to prejudice
any Persons Mind against the place,-he desired permission
to be granted to his Wife to bring him Foud on the three
days of the Week which was not agreed to, but is
left for the opinion of the Court

The Surgeon Reported That of 188. Prisoners 3, only
were in the Infirmary, but not one seriously ill

The Kitchen Chimney contracted is found to throne
a much greater Heat into the Room with a much less
Quantity of Coals:-
