September 1796.

Sir

As Treasurer of the City of London I have paid
upwards of £521..9s..6d towards the support of the Families
of Militia Men, who serve as Substitutes in the Middlesex
Militia which Sum according to the Act should upon the
delivery of my Account properly Authenticated to the
Treasurer of the County be forthwith paid and returned to
me - it is now near three Months since a List of Sundry
Sums amounting to £261..15s..10d paid by me was delivered
to Mr.. Burchell the Treasurer for Middlesex but as I
am informed he not being in Cash is prevented from
reimbursing me - as there has been not only the above
Sum and one near equal to it already advanced by me
but continual Claims for a further supply I hope you
and the rest of the Magistrates of the County will enable
Mr. Burchell forthwith to discharge the above and
what further - demand I may have on him for the
Militia Service

I am
Sir
Your most Obedient Servant.
John Wilkes< no role >

Ordered That a Letter be written to Mr. Wilkes
to acquaint him that his Letter had been laid before the
Court and that Mr.. Burchell the County Treasurer had been
examined respecting the Subject matter of it and that the
delay of payment appear'd to be in Consequence of the very
great Demand lately made on him and the difficulty of
obtaining the Money assessed on the several Parishes towards
the County Rate but that the Court had given directions to
the Treasurer to pay the Money due to the City out of the
first Monies which should come to his hands. -
