Case.
The Gaol of Newgate
which is situate in the City of
London is the common
Prison and place of Security for Felons and
other Offenders as well for the City of London
as for the County of
Middlesex
and the Citizens of London have since the time of its
Erection had the Government and management of it without any
interference from the Magistracy or Inhabitants of the County of
Middlesex
The Citizens by Charter have the nomination and
Appointment of the Sheriff for the County of Middlesex
and City of
London. The Sheriff usually nominates the Keeper of Newgate and
the Court of Aldermen receive such nomination and confirm the
Appointment.
The Court of Aldermen of the City of London
have
uninterruptedly exercised this Right of Appointment and have from
