His Majestys Justices of the Peace here Assembled in open Court having taken
Notice of a Petition lately presented to the Honourable House of Commons Intituled the
Petition of the several Persons whose names were thereunto Subscribed on behalf of
themselves and others the Inhabitants of London residing near the Gaol of Newgate
Complaining of the ill State of that Gaol and a Subsequent Petition of the Lord Mayor
Aldermen and Commons of the City of London in Common Council Assembled
representing that the said Gaol ought to be rebuilt at the Expence of the City of
London and the County of Middlesex in such Proportion as shall be thought reasonable
and taking into their serious consideration the Allegations and whole matter of the
said several Petitions now depending before the said House of Parliament and more
particularly such parts thereof as do suggest that this County ought to contribute
to the Expence of the rebuilding the said Gaol and the great Burthen it will lay
upon this County and conceiving several important reasons against such intended
Expence Have thought fit and accordingly Ordered that an humble Petition of
his Majesty's said Justices on behalf of themselves and the rest of the Inhabitants
of this County be immediately prepared praying to be heard by themselves or their
Council against the matters of the above mentioned Petitions tending to lay a Charge
on this County Whereupon a Petition being now prepared and agreed to by this
Court It is resolved that the same be forthwith presented to the Honourable House
of Commons And that the said Sir William Beauchamp< no role > Proctor one of the Knights
of the Shire for this County and The Right Honourable the Lord Warkworth and
The Honourable Edwyn Sandys Esquire Representatives of the City and Liberty of
Westminster in the same County be and they are hereby requested to present the
said Petition accordingly. And it is further Ordered that it be and it is hereby
recommended and referred to Thomas Lane< no role > Esqr and to John Hawkins< no role > John
Spencer Colepeper
< no role > John Brettel< no role > Bartholomew Hammond< no role > Elisha Biscoe< no role > &
William Bayntun< no role > Esqrs here present to meet together with such others of
his Majesty's Justices aforesaid as shall please to be present at such times
and Places as any five of the last named Justices shall Appoint to manage
and direct the proceeding in the above Application And to retain and employ
proper Councel and a Sollicitor in parliament And Mr. James Jefferson< no role > is hereby
authorized and directed to Sollicit the said Petition on the behalf of
the Justices of the Peace of this County who together with The Rt. Honr.
He Ld Warkworth The Hon Mr Sandys< no role > St. George Colebrook Bart . &
Hawley Esqr . have contributed & subscribed and paid into the Hands of the
said James Jefferson< no role > the Sum of Forty two pounds towards the charge &
expence of such Application And the said Mr Jefferson is hereby required
to attend the said Comittee of Justices and to receive their Instructions
and to proceed according to their direction from time to time And lastly
it is ordered that this present General Session be held by further Adjourn
ment in every week until his Majesty's said Justices shall otherwise order
and Adjourn the same.
