Writing of the said Hardy with the Name Affixed to the said
Letter of Attorney produced by said Carr there was not found
the least Similitude of Hands And that the Second and third
Payments of the said Prizes had been paid in June One
Thousand Seven hundred and forty Nine to Mary Harris< no role > as
Executrix to the said John Hardy< no role > All Which this Informant
Shew'd to said Carr And then told him he was Convinced the said
Letter of Attorney must be forged, said Carr replied he Was
Sure it was not that What appear'd on those Books Were
Errors of the Clerks And that he knew Mary Harris< no role > for Whom
he Appeared And that she was a Very honest Woman, Whereupon
this Informant desired the might Apply herself, that he might
ask her Some Questions Which he Evaded by Saying he had
paid [..] the Money due (to said Hardy) to the Said Harris And
it Was now become his property which Occasionedsaidthis
Informant to insist upon said Carrs producing an Order from
the said Mary Harris< no role > Attested by two Creditable Witnesses
Which he made not the least Difficulty about And the same
Day or Very soon after brought this Informant An Order directing
him this Informant to pay the said John Carr< no role > said Hardys Share
of Prize Money Which said Order was subscribed with the
Mark of Mary Harris< no role > Attested by William Barry< no role > and Wm Lloyd< no role >
When the said Carr Strongly Solicited for payment of said prize Money
and continued so to do Several Days in every Week between said twenty Second
Day of November And the fifteenth Instant Always Averring himself
to be A Man of Credit And that the said Mary Harris< no role > Was an honest
Creditable Woman And could obtain a Certificate from the Parish of
Saint Georges Southwark Whereunto she belong'd for that purpose
from the forgoing Circumstances this Informant Was convinced in
himselfand believedsaid Lre of Attorney so produced as aforesaid
was a forged Letter of Attorney And that he verily beleive the said John Carr< no role > as the
time of publishing thereof knew the same to be forged Which Occationed
this Informant to represent the Whole Transaction to the Gentlemen
concerned with him as partners in the payment of said Prize money who
were all of An Opinion With this Informant And that a further Inquiry
Should be made into the Ships Books at the [..] Office to know
whether said Hardy was Dead or Alive When it Was made Appear
to this Informant the said Hardy Was drowned on boarding a Privateer
the twentyeth day of March One Thousand Seven hundred & forty
Seven That the said Carr Was present at the time the person Was Sent
to the Navy Office to know the Truth, but before the Messager returned
the said Carr hastily Went Away And did not Wait for An Answer Which
Was a Confirmation to the beleife of him this Informant of the said Carr knowing the
Said Deed at the time of Altering and Publishing thereof to be forged and
