The Jurors for our Lord ye King upon their Oath present That Wm. Viner< no role > late of London Staymaker
on ye first day of January In ye 15 year of ye Reign of our Sovereign Lord George ye Second King of Great Britn.
France and Ireland Defender of ye faith Etc and divers other times between that day and ye day of ye taking
of this Inquisition with force & arms at London to Witt in ye parish of Saint Martin Ludgate in ye Ward of
Farringdon without in London afd did keep and maintain and yet doth keep and maintain a certain Common
Ill governed and disorderly house and in his said house for his own Lucre and gain certain evil and Ill disposed
persons as well Men as Women of Evil name and fame and of dishonest Conversacon to frequent and come
together then and ye sd. other days & times there unlawfully and wilfully did cause and procure and ye said Men &
Women in his said house at unlawful times as well in ye night as in ye day then and the said other days and
times there to be and remain drinking tipling whoring and Misbehaving themselves unlawfully and
Wilfully did permitt and yet doth permitt to the Great damage and Comon Nusance of all ye Subjects of Our
said Lord ye King and agt. ye peace of Our said Lord ye King his Crown & Dignity Etc

The Case


The Deft keeps a Common Bawdy house (as described in ye Indictment) upon Ludgate hill at ye Sign of
the Bunch of Grapes with his Name upon it where all Sorts of Strong Liquors are sold for ye Entertainmt
of loose persons of both Sexes at all hours both Night and day To ye Great Nusance and disturbance of
the Neighbourhood who are most of them Creditable and Substantial Tradesmen

The Deft having for this Offence been returned by the Wardmote Inquest was ordered to be prosecud
at the City's Expence You will observe he is Stiled Stay maker in the Indictment, It seems ye Gentleman to
account in some measure for ye great Number of females resorting to his house gives out that he
follows ye Business of Staymaking, But as We shall be able to prove that all ye Ladies pick up Men in ye
Streets at all hours of ye night & carry them to his house, We hope ye Jury will be of Opinion they do not
go there to make Stays.

Proofs
That frequently in the Night time Men and Women go in and out of Defts
house, that ye Women are Comon Street Walkers and frequently Pick up Men in the
Streets and carry them into Deft's house, That Generally Men ring the Bell or knock
at ye door with their Sticks or Canes at 1,2, & 3, o'Clock in the Morning & are lett in,
and Deponents have carried some of the Women who ledge or frequent Defts house to
the Watchhouse for Common Street Walkers & Say Defts house is a Notorious
Disorderly house, and that Deft pretends he is a Staymaker & that ye Women are his
Journey women}
