Deposition of a Witness taken as the Work house
of Saint Olaves Parish in the parish of Saint John
within the Borough of Southwark in the County
of Surrey this 18th day of April 1796 on view of
the Body of John Hogthen< no role > now here lying
Dead.

Ralph Gibson< no role > Carpenter of the Pearl Brig now lying
as a [..] ier opposite the Tower whereof Thomas Thompson< no role >
belonging to Newcastle upon tyre bound out wards maketh Oath
that he hath known the deced John Negther about three weeks
that he was a Mariner belonging to the said Vessel and has
been so as Dept. understood near four Yearsthat about six
O' Clock in the Morning of Monday last the deced Dept. and another
of the Mariners belonging to the said vessel were employed in
Hackening some Ropes (the Stern fastenings of the Vessel) in order
to let a Lighter come between Dept. vessel and vessel that say
next Depts. that was to be unloadedthat the deced got on board the other vessel an got upon
a Board called the gate Board which is fastened to the lower
past of the main Rigging of the Vessel that while there by
slackening the Ropes the vessels sheered from last otherthe
Deced was going to jump from the other vessel Dept. advised
him not but not withstanding in a very little time after the
Deced endeavoured to jump from the other Vessel to his own
but while so doing the Vessels sheered further a past and
the deced could not get hold by which means he fell into the
Water between the two vesselsthat before any assistance
could be afforded him he sark under the Waterthat Dept.
understood the deced was taken out of the water on Saturday last
Dept. has seen the deced their afternoon lying dead in Saint Olaves
Workhouse .
