Informations of Witnesses
taken at the parish of Allhallows
Barking in the ward of Tower in
London aforesaid on the 2d day of June 1792
on view of the Body of Paul Hughes now
here lying dead.

George Scott< no role > a Marine belonging to the Brig Swift< no role >
ofDublinLondon whereof William Rogers< no role > is Master
now lying at the Dublin Chain in the River Thames opposite
the Custom house in the Parish of Allhallows Barking London maketh
Oath that about one O Clock in the afternoon of Monday last the deced who was a Mariner belonging to the same
Vessel & Dept: were employed in swaping the Main Mart of
said Vessel for the Boatswain of the same Vessel to paint the
samethat the deced and Dept. were standing on the Deck of
said Vessel near to each other the Boatswain then standing
on the Top of one of the Pumps near the Main mastthat soon
after the Boatswain asked Dept. were the deced wasDept.
looking round mist the decedDept. went backward and
forward on the Deck calling for the deced but reced no answer
that soon after the Boatswain still standing on the Top of one of the
Pumps cryed out and sayed Paul Hughes is over board
Dept. immediately ran aft and looked over the Quarter of
the said Vessel to see in any Boat was there in order to assist
the deced that on looking over the Quarter he saw the deced
struggling in the Water endeavouring to swimthat the Tide
ran up the Rivers very strongDept. have a Bundle of Hoops
over towards the deced in order that he might take hold of them
that the Hoops fell within about ten Feet of the deced that
the deced endeavoured to make towards them but not knowing how
to swim he could not get near enough then and soon after sank under
the Waterthat Dept. saw the deced lying dead in a Boat near
the Dept. Vessel this afternoon about One O Clock the deced
having as dept. understood been taken up out of the Water a little
time beforethat at the time of Missing the deced as before late
no persons were on the Deck of said Vessel but Dept. At the
Boatswain of said Vessel.
