Depositions of Witnesses taken at the
Parish of Saint Sepulchre the 26th. day of
August 1791 on view of the Body of Charles
Gill then and there lying dead

John Slack< no role > a prisoner in His Majesty< no role > 's Gaol of Newgate
on a charge of piracy maketh Oath-that Yesterday Morning
about nine OClock the deced. Thomas Shanton< no role > , Deponent
George Hindmarsh< no role > , and several other Prisoners came from
their difft. Rooms in the Prison of Newgate into an open
Yard of the said Prison-that the [..] stanton
asked the deced for his Bazill Strongs (being Strings that
the prisoners tye their Irons up with) the deced sayed
he would not give them to him (Stanton) Stanton then
sayed he would be damned of he did not have then
meaning the Bazill Strings, the deced then took the Strings
out of his pocket and with a Knife cut them to pieces
Stanton then went away from the deced to another hard of
the Yard Dept: soon after turning round saw the deced
and Stanton going towards each other in a posture of
defence in order to fight that both Stanton and the
deced had their Cloaths on that they struck each other
some Hores that they did not appears to strike each
other every hard that the deced [..] appeared more angry
then Stanton< no role > that they soon after closed with each other
and in parting Stanton pushed the deced from him with
his hand by which means the deced fell backwards
upon his Back upon the Stones that the back part of the
deced's head fell against the Stones in the Yard
that the deced immediately endeavoured to get up and
