An Inquisition Indented taken for our Sovereign Lord the King at the parish of Saint Thomas
within the Borough of Southwark in the County of Surrey on the second day of December in the Twenty ninth Year
of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King
Defender of the faith and so forth Before Thomas Shelton< no role > Gentleman Coroner of our said Lord the King for the City of
London and Borough of Southwark on view of the Body of James Coroner then and there lying dead by the Oath of Thomas Law< no role > ,John Mitchell< no role >
James Maull< no role > , Robert Pearse< no role > , John Taylor< no role > William Pridgen< no role > , Philip Windson< no role > , Thomas Manner, Chistopher

William Cromwell< no role > and John Lee< no role > good and lawful Men of the said Borough who being no where duly chosen sworn and
charged to Inquire for our said Lord the King when how and after what manner the said James Gardner< no role > came to
his Death say upon their Oath that John Nowland< no role > late of the parish of Saint Mary Magdalen< no role > Bermondsey in
the County of Surrey Labourer not having the fear of God before his Eyes but being and seduced by the
instigation of the Devil on the thirtieth day of November in the Twenty ninth Year aforesaid with Force and Arms
at the parish last aforesaid in the County aforesaid in and upon the said James Gardner< no role > in the peace of God
and our said Lord the King then and there being feloniously wilfully and of his malice aforethought did make
an assault and that the said John Nowland< no role > with a certain Wooden Staft of the value two pence which he the
said John Nowland< no role > in both his Hands then and there had and held him the said James Gardner< no role > in and upon the
Right side of the head of him the said James Gardner< no role > then and there feloniously wilfully and of his malice
afore thought did strike and beatgiving to him the said James Gardner< no role > then and there feloniously wilfully
[..] giving to him the said James Gardner< no role >
then and there by such striking and beating of the said James Gardner< no role > with the wooden staff aforesaid
one mortal Bruise and Fracture in and upon the said right side of the head of him the said James
Gardner of which said mortal Bruise and Fracture he the said James Gardner< no role > on the said Thirtieth day of
November in the Year aforesaid as well at the said parish of Saint Mary Magdalen< no role > Bermondsey in the
County aforesaid as also at the said parish of Saint Thomas within the Borough aforesaid in the
County aforesaid did languish and languishing did live on which said Thirtieth day of November in the Year
aforesaid at the said parish of Saint Thomas within the Borough aforesaid in the County aforesaid the said
James Gardner< no role > of the said Mortal Bruise and Fracture did die And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their
Oath aforesaid do say that the said John Nowland< no role > him the said James Gardner< no role > in manner and form
aforesaid feloniously wilfully and of his malice aforethought did kill and Murder against the peace of our
said Lord the King his Crown and Dignity and that the said Nowland after he had done and committed
the Felony and Murder aforesaid in manner and by the means aforesaid withdrew himself and fled for
the same And that the said [..] John Nowland< no role > at the time of committing the Felony and Murder aforesaid
or at any time since had no goods or Chattels Lands or Tenements within the said Borough of elsewhere
in the said County to the knowledge of the said Jurors In Witness whereof as well the said Coroner
as the said Jurors have to this Inqusition set their hands and seals the day Year and place first
above written
