Wakefield
22d. April 1749
There is a Question now depending in
the Common
Pleas (and which shd. be argued this Term) Between the Clerk
of the Peace for the West Riding & the Justices Clerks touching their
several Rights & Shares in a Fee of 2s.6d which has been usually taken
in this Riding for a Licence granted to an Alehousekeeper, & divided
equally between [..] of the Peace and the Justices Clerks, the
Justices Clerks now pretend they are intitled to the whole, & some
people think there's no more than 12d. due to all or any of them;
as this is a matter of great Consequence to the Clerk of the Peace
for the
West Riding and probably to you and many other Clerks of the
Peace, if you wou'd be pleased to consult with your Brethren & with
Mr. Henry Wilmot< no role >
of Greys Inn
my Agent
(who will acquaint you
with the whole matter and with what has been done at the Assises)
you wou'd probably Conclude of something proper to be done, wherein
the Clerk of the Peace
for the West Riding will readily concur with
you, he has hitherto sustained the Fight singly, at a great Expence,
[..] he united forces of the Justices Clerks for the West Riding.
I am Sir
Your most hble Servt.
