To His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the County of Middx
in their General Session of the Peace held for the said County in the
month of September 1781 assembled

The Humble Petition of Samual Newport< no role >
Keeper of New Prison at Clerkenwell in the
County of Middlesex

Sheweth


That at the General Session of the Peace held for this
County in the month of December last your Petitioner presented as
Petition selling forth various hardships loses and Expences which he
then had suffered and incurred in consequence of the number of prisoner's
in his Custody since the then late dreadful Riots that your Worships were
then so indulgent as to grant your Petitioner Twenty Pounds and to
intimate to your Petitioner that if he continued to labour under such
circumstances for any longer time your Worships would be pleased to
make him some further allowance That your Petitioner hath continued
to labour under circumstances of the like kind from that time to the
present is within the knowledge of many of Your Worships but should
it be doubted your Petitioner is ready to inform your Worships of the
particulars of his situation in respect to the extraordinary trouble anxoity
and Expence he has suffered and even at present suffers in the management
and Government of the very great number of annuity and desperate
offenders which have been in the time last abovementioned and now
are in his Custody

Your Petitioner therefore most humbly and
earnestly prays that your worships will be
pleased to take his case into Consideration and
grant to him such other recompense as to your
Worships shall seem meet

And Your Petitioner as in duty bound will
ever pray Etc.
