Maintenance but the very Indifferent Success of the
Proceeding therein at Bridewell is no Inducement to
Execute Your Power at New Prison .

That the Supplying necessary Relief to proper Objects in
the said Prison occasionally upon the Report or Application of
the Keeper will not Cause any Considerable Expence to this
County there being few Prisoners Committed to his Custody as
he readily declared but are able to Support themselves or have
Friends that Visit and relieve them and that those few either
by his own Assistance or some other Friendly means have been
Subsisted in a Tolerable manner In as much as none have
Perished or been in Extreain Want and during his whole
Keepership there hath not been any Mortality but the Prisoners
have Continued in a good State of Health.

That a Competent Saving for this Purpose might be made out
of the Allowances to the Prisoners in the House of Correction
(the Annual Charges whereof is 70 or £80.) if those able were
to be kept Strictly to Labour for their own Support (as it is in the
indispensible Duty of the Governor to keep them to and an Obligation
on the Majistrates to see performed) and that none but those
who work and who are Poor and friendless should have the
Allowance agreeable to the True Sense of the Legislature
as well for the Correcting their Morals as for the Ease of the
County in Point of Charge Whereas the Daily Allowance of
Bread is now distributed without distinction whereby those who
are nowise the Objects of the benevolent Intention of the Sessions
are equal Partakers with them that are

That if three a four Justices whom it best Suited or by turns were
Appointed by the Sessions to Continue as a Committee to Superintend
the Government of both the said Prisons to see the severall Acts
of Parliament and Orders of Court punctually Executed and to
receive the Occasionel Applications of the Keepers and give
them Assistance and direction from Time to Time it would
be productive of good Effect to this County more Especially with
respect to the House of Correction in providing proper Stocks of
Work or seeing that the Keeper did it and by keeping
