Middx.
Wee whose Names are hereunto Subscribed being (amongst
others) appointed a Committee by an Order made in May
Sessions 1733 to take a view & see what Repairs are wanting
& necessary to be Done to the House of Correction
at Clerken
-well, And what it will Cost to Repair the Same.
Report Concer
-ning the
House of
Correction}
Do Certifie, That on Our view We are of Opinion that
the Said Prison is not Strong Enough for the safe Custody of the
Prisoners Committed thither & should be made Stronger, and
that the said Prison is very much our of Repair Cought to be
well and Sufficiently repaired, for which purposes Wee
think that the leaden Gutters be new, And all the Rooms
up Stairs ought to be secured by planking the Windows from
the Window Stools to the floor
whiwith Inch & half Oak
plank drove with Nails, And that the Room where the hemp
lies, And the Walls which are thin ought to be planked
Seven foot High, & thirteen foot in length, And that the shed
leading into the Outward Court over which the Scaping
Prisoners got, Ought to be Raised as high as the Mondillion
or Cornish If the back part of the new Prison
, the Roof to
be turned, And that the Wooden Fence is Rotten & decayed &
a new One Ought to be made higher & stronger & painted
three times in Oyh, with Stronger Iron Spikes, that the
Roof wants to be new Ripped & Oak Laths used in Tyling
the Same, And the whole wants new painting, Estimates of
the Charge of strengthning & Repairing the said House of
Correction Wee have Caused to be made which wee, finding
will Amount to a very Considerable Sum did not think fitt
to lay the Estimates before this Court But to Recommend the
Effectuall Repairing the said house of Correction
to the
Consideration of this Court in the Manner Goals are directed
to be repaired or rebuilt by the Statute in such Case
made & Provided, the 11 & 12 W:3: Cap:19.
Wee further Certifie that upon the Information of Mr.
Peter Cresswell< no role >
the Keeper
, We find that Mary Best< no role >
has
for many years lived in the House at the Entrance of the
said Prison & Acted in the Nature of a Turnkey, Who we
do not think a proper Person, And for want of Such a One
Wee are of Opinion Escapes may happen, We do therefore
propose that for the Safe Custody of Prisoners, there be
for the Future an able and Strongman employed by
the said Mr. Cresswell< no role >
to dwell in the said house where
the said Mary Best< no role >
now lives, And wee do Recommend
