THE Information of Silvanus Hopping< no role > of Ratcliff Highway in the
Parish of Saint Paul Shadwell in the County aforesaid Grocer
Taken this 20th Day of November 1783 before me
of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said County,

Who being upon Oath saith that about half past seven O Clock in the Evening
of the Eighteenth day of Novr. Inst. he and Mr. Woodcock a Neighbour of his were
Setting in the Parlour behind his Shop when a person came
into the Shop and asked for a Penny worth of Tobacco which
he Served him with but having some suspicion from his looking
over the Shop Counter as if he wanted to take something he
Communicated the same to Mr. Woodcock who was also of the same
Opinion. That on the said Persons going out he Bolled one
door and shut the other door to which fastens with a
Spring Bolt< no role > but which well fly open by being pushed very hard
That after the above person was gone he went into the Parlour
again and had not been there more than Minutes when he imagined
he heard a noise as if some person was going up Stairs. whereupon
Mr. Woodcock looking into the Shop a Saw a Person looking [..]
through the [..] Glass door of the Shop when Informant got up
to go into the Shop and saw the prisoner now here present
and who calls himself John Spence< no role > with a Canister now also
herepresentproduced containing Five pounds and Eleven Ounces weight of Green
Tea in his Arons. That Informant ran into the Street and secured
the said John Spence< no role > at the distance of about two Yards from
his Shop door with the Canister and Tea Contained therein as
abovementioned.
