These are to Certify that at the Delivery of the King's Gaol of
Newgate holden for the County of Middlesex at Justices hall in the Old Bailey in the
Suburbs of the City of London on Wednesday the Tenth day of September in the
twenty third year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third King of
Great Britain Etc Before Nathaniel Newnham< no role > Esquire Mayor of the City of
London Sir Henry Gorid Knight one of the Justices of our said Lord the King
of his Court of Common pleas Sir William Henry< no role > Ashhurt Kright one of
the Justices our said Lord the King assigned to told pleas before the King
himself Sir Beaumont Hotham< no role > Knight one of the Barows of our said Lord
the King of his Court of Exchequer , John Hart< no role > Esquire one of the
Hidermen of the said City Henry Kitchin< no role > Esquire one other of the Alermen of the
said City, John Boydell< no role > Esquire one other of the Aldermen of he said City
Thomas Harrison< no role > Esquire and others their fellows Justices of our said Lord
the King assigned to deliver the said Gaol of Newgate of the Prisoners therein
being Edward Edson< no role > of the age of Twenty two years and William Spong< no role > of the age of Twenty three
years Convicted at the General Session of the Delivery of the said Goal of
Newgate holden for the County of Middlesex aforesaid on Wednesday
the twenty third day of duly last of a Robbery on the King's Highway
for which they were by law liable to suffer Death without benefit of
Clergy, but to whom his. Majesty hath been since graciously pleased to
Extend his Royal Mercy upon Condition of their being kept to hard
Labour for the term of four years in raising sand, Soil and Gravel
from and cleansing the River Thomas under the direction of the Superintend [..]
or Superintendants appointed by the Act of Parliament in such case made
and provided And such intention of mercy having been notified in
writing to the Court first abovementioned by the Right Honourable Sir
Frederick North< no role > Knight commonly called Lord North one of this Majesty's
Principal Secretaries of State she said Court did then and there order
and adjudge the said Edward Edson< no role > and William Spong< no role > to be kept to
such hard Labour for the said Term of four years under the direction of
the superintendant or Superintendants appointed as aforesaid pursuant
to the Statute in such case made and provided Dated this 26th. day
of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and
Eighty three.
