In the Magistrates Letter from Lambeth St. Mr. Reynell dated July 30. 1795 he thus treats of Pope, I find that Wm Pope< no role > is a very old offender that he has been Considered as a very dangerous Man to Society On the 14 May 1794 he was charged with Several other notorious Persons on Suspicion of having Committed divers footpad Robberres in the County of Surry, one of whom named William Hurst< no role > was Convicted and Executed for a Robbery on the Croydon Road, Pope was much Suspected of being a party with Hurst in the Robbery, his Person Not being identified he was Sent on Board the Tender where he was discharged as he Sayd from a Pretended hurt he had in his Head which disabled him from doing duty as a Seaman , He then acknowledged that he had been lately discharged from the Hulks.
