Sr:
I am to acknowledge the favour of yours of the 6th: of
June
, which I should have done sooner, were it not that I have been pretty
much in the Country. I desire you'll present my hearty Service to my
Brethren on the Bench; & tell them I should most willingly accept their
Invitation, & take a Dinner with them on the 10th: instant
, had it
not been attended with a Demand, which I must needs think very
improper, & I believe without a President
I will very freely aquaint you with the reasons that induced
me & the late Coll
: Gardner to grant Gill of Twickenham
a Licence
which were because we apprehended him to be a very proper man
to be licenced; & that the Law gave us a discretionary Authority
to grant Licences to proper persons. I cannot see but that we
have exercised that Authority according to Law: & therefore don't
think I am very handsomely used in being served with a Writing in the
nature of a Summons to demand before a Publick Assembly the
motives that induced me to grant the Licence.
You will excuse me Sr. when I till you that these are my
Sentiments; as they were of Coll: Gardner to. I am
2 July 1729.
Sr:
Your very hble Servt:
Will; Powlett< no role >
