Bridge.}

Whereas at the General Session of the Peace for this County holden by
Adjournment on Thursday the 20th. day of February last past an Order of
referrence was made Reciting that a Presentment had been made at the then
last General Quarter Session by the Grand Jury that a Certain part of Chertsey
Bridge then was and for some time past had been in decay and want of repair
as therein is mentioned By which said Order it was recommended and
referred to John Hawkins< no role > Esqr . Sir John Gibbons< no role > Baronet and Knight of the
Bath George Errington< no role > . Boulton Mainwaring< no role > , Bartholomew Hammond< no role > Esquires
Sir Philip Musgrave< no role > Baronet Thomas Wood< no role > Vansittart Hudson< no role > , James
Clitherow, John Brettell< no role > Elisha Biscoe< no role > , John Spencer Colepeper< no role > , William
Godfrey
< no role > (since deceased) James Esdaile< no role > Esquires and such other of his Majestys
Justices of the Peace for this County as should Please to be present or any three
or more of them as a Committee to meet to view and Examine that part of
the said Bridge which lyes within this County and ought to be repaired and
maintained at the charge of the Inhabitants thereof and to Order and direct
such repairs as should be found necessary And Whereas a view of the said
Bridge was had by the said George Errington< no role > , Boulton Mainwaring, Bartholo
Hammond and Thomas Wood< no role > Esquires a Quorum of the said Committee on
the day for that purpose appointed and a particular account was set down in
Writing of the wants of repair in the said Bridge and hath been delivered into
Court and it then appeared to the said Justices that the Camp shot above the
said Bridge against a Certain Wharf in the Possession of the said Mr. Wood was
very much decayed by time and the Force of Water on that side the River and
that the Abutment and foot of the Bridge had been Damaged thro' the defects
and decay of the said Campshot and would be in continual danger if not
Effectually repaired the whole length of the Wharf to Secure the said Abutment
from the great Force of Water and after some Enquiry made of William
Cracknell and William Westbrook< no role > two Bystanders being Old Men it was
Questioned to whom it belonged to repair and maintain the said Campshott
and front of the said Wharf which hath for a long time been in the Possession
of the said Mr. Wood and his Ancestors and now upon further debate of the said
Question in the presence and hearing of the said Mr. Wood who Alledges and
Insists that he is not by reason of his Tenure or otherwise at Law Chargeable
with the repair and maintenance of the said Campshot but that the
Inhabitants of this County have hitherto repaired and maintained and of right
ought to repair and maintain the same for the Security and Preservatrion of
the said County Bridge and that the said Campshot hath accordingly been,
repaired at the Public charge about forty years ago and after inspection of
