Joseph Williams< no role > This name instance is in set 1534. This set is in the group(s): GarrowsClients . late of Hastings in the County of Sussex but
now a Prisoner in his Majestys Jail of Newgate on the above
Prosecution maketh Oath and saith That on Saturday the
twelfth of this present Instant May he was apprehended in the
City of London and charged with having obstructed and assaulted
his Majesty's Revenue Officers and rescued uncustomed Goods at
near Northfleet in the County of Kent which is about twenty
three Miles of LondonThat in consequence thereof he was
taken to the Compter in the City of London and debarred the use
of pen ink or paper or the Permission of any Person to see
him. That on the Monday following being the 14th. he was examined
before the Sitting Alderman at Guildhall and then committed
to take his Trial on the above ChargeThat he this Deponent
being totally ignorant of the necessary proceedings in such Cases
nor a Person gaining his livelihood by such illicit practices,
several days of the short interval of time between his Committment
and the present Sessions elapsed before he took any step to
acquaint his Friends who reside in the Further most Parts of
the County of Kent of his Situation [..]

That this Deponent on his Oath [..] most solemnly avers that he neither
counselled advised abetted aided or assisted either in the
said Obstruction Assault or rescue That he this Deponent hath been informed and verily believes it to be at the time also
when that Offence was committed there were two or three
other persons near whom this Deponent verily believes were
also Spectators only of such Obstruction & Assault, and that
this Deponent has since taken every step in his power to
inform himself of the Names and places of abode of the said
Persons without his having had it yet in his Power to procure
[..] a thorough and sufficient information of them soar to be
able to produce them at this Present Sessions-And this deponent
Further saith tha he cannot with safety to himself proceed
