An Inquisition indented taken for our sovereign Lord the King at The Parish of Saint James
Clerkenwell in the County of Middlesex , the Fifth Day of September In the 21st Year of the
Reign of our Sovereign Lord GEORGE the third , by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland, KING, Defender of the
Faith, Etc. before Edward Umfreville< no role > one of the Coroner s of Our said Lord the
KING, for the said County, on view of the body s of Benjamin Lees< no role > , William Trenter< no role > and George
Hutton then and there lying dead, upon the oath of Joseph Collier< no role > Ephram
Bell, Samuel Ridgley< no role > , Jeremiah Lawless< no role > , Richard Shearsmith< no role > , Alexander Ferguson< no role >
James Taylor< no role > , Joseph Cox< no role > , Andrew Taylor< no role > , John Love< no role > , Thomas Clare, William
Hennings< no role > , William Flude< no role > , William Watson< no role > , Edward Baker< no role > Thomas

and Christopher White< no role > good and lawfull Men of the said County duly chosen
good and lawful Men of the said County duly chosen as by Law required,and who being then and there duly sworn
and charged to enquire for Our said Lord the KING, when, how, and by what means the said Benjamin Lees< no role > William
Frenter and George Hutton< no role > Hon came to h is Death s do upon their oath say, That the said Benjamin Lees< no role >
William Trenter< no role > and George Hutton< no role > the Third Day of September in the year
aforesaid being Prisoner in New Prison in the Parish and County aforesaid
And having with divers other Prisoners in an unlawfull riotous and tumultous
Manner assembled themselves together and attempted to break out of and escape
from the said Prison And having also in such their Attempt unlawfully and
with Force and Arms assaulted certain Person's to the Jurors aforesaid unknown
who were then and there Stationed to keep the said Prison and to prevent the
Prisoners therein confined from breaking out and escaping there from They the
said Persons so as aforesaid unknown in their own Defence and in Order to
prevent the said Prisoners from making their Escape as aforesaid certain
Guns Loaded with Gunpowder and Leaden Bullets which they then and
there had and held in their Hands to and amongst the said Prisoners did
then and there shoot off and discharge By Means whereof they the said
Benjamin Lees< no role > , William Trenter< no role > and George Hutton< no role > Did then and there
receive divers mortal wounds in and upon the Bodies of them the said Benjamin
Lees William Trenter and George Hutton< no role > Of which said Mortal Wounds they
the said Benjamin Lees< no role > , William Trenter< no role > and George Hutton< no role > then and there
Died And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their Oath aforesaid Do say That the
said Persons so as aforesaid unknown in Defence of themselves and to prevent the
Escape of the said Benjamin Lees< no role > , William Trenter< no role > and George Hutton< no role > and the
Rest of the said Prisoners as aforesaid, them the said Benjamin Lees< no role > William
Trenter and George Hutton< no role > in Manner and by the Means aforesaid did kill and clay

In Witness whereof, as well the said Coroner, as the said Joseph Collier< no role > the Foreman of
the said Jurors on behalf of himself and the rest of his Fellows, in their presence, have to this Inquisition set their
Hands and Seals the Day and Year first abovementioned
