informed this Comee
that Several Complaints had been made to him by the friends of
persons who have been comitted Prisoners to their hospital that at
their first comeing in the rest of the Prisoners demand one
Shilling Garmish money of the new Prisoners and if they have no
money, compell them to pawn or Sell their wearing apparrell to
raise itWhereupon this Comee examined one Thomas

called in he denyed that he knew any thing of the Prisonrs.
pawning or Selling their Cloths to raise money to pay Garnish
-Then Mr. Mitton Daughter to the late Matron was called
in, and said that the women prisoners have often complained
to her Mother that they had been compelled at their first
comeing in, either to soll or pawne their Cloths to raise
money for Garmsh And the said Joseph Thomas< no role >

being called in. Thomas Confessed
that he lent Fowler one Shilling upon his Buckler and both
of them confessed that Garmsh money was usually paid and
said it was an antient Custome here, and in all other
prisons in and about this Citty Then Eagle being called in aga [..] &
reexamined coufessed what he had before deuyed This
Comee haveing considered the matter, are of Opinion that
this practice is a very great abuse and ought to be prevented
for the future-This Court haveing duely weighed &
considered the said Report doth confirme the same
And it is Ordered that it be referred back to the
same Comee to consider how to prevent the like abuse
for the future and to give such direccons therein as they
shall Judge proper.
